How often to empty and deep-clean a self-cleaning litter box

Empty on the maker's schedule divided by your cats; deep-clean monthly.

By Felineering Editorial · Updated October 2026

The short answer

Empty the bin on roughly the maker's stated days ÷ your number of cats: a bin rated up to 14 days for one cat needs emptying about weekly with two. Top up litter as it drops, and deep-clean the drum or bed about monthly, following the manual.

  • Dry fully before refilling litter.

Consumables

Replace pads, filters and deodorizers on their own schedules. PETLIBRO says its Luma pad lasts up to three months.
