Stainless, ceramic or plastic cat water fountain?

Stainless or ceramic for easier cleaning; plastic for price and features.

By Felineering Editorial · Updated October 2026

The short answer

Stainless steel resists scratches and dents where bacteria collect; ceramic is smooth and heavy but can chip; plastic is light and cheap and has the most features. Many 'stainless' fountains are stainless only on the tray.
