Why it matters
Dr. Elsey's Ultra is 100% bentonite clay in a medium grain sized for hard clumps that don't break down, which keeps moisture off the bottom of the box and makes scooping clean.
It's unscented, and Dr. Elsey's describes it as 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic for cats and owners with allergies. The medium grain also limits tracking.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Good fit if
- Unscented preference
- Allergy-prone homes
- Self-cleaning boxes that take clumping litter
Look elsewhere if
- Owners who want a light bag
- Flushing (clay isn't flushable)
- Crystal-tray boxes
Pros and cons
Pros
- Hard clumps
- Unscented
- Very low dust
Cons
- 40 lb bag is heavy
- Not flushable
- Clay is not biodegradable
Limitations to weigh
- In a self-cleaning box, use it only where the box's maker accepts clumping litter; most globe and open-top boxes do, crystal-tray boxes don't.
- Switch litters gradually by mixing in the new one over about a week; abrupt changes can put cats off the box.
- The bag weight is what you carry, not how long it lasts; lighter formulas cover the same use with less weight.
