Catios and Cat Enclosures

A catio lets an indoor cat get fresh air without the risks of roaming. Wood-and-wire catios suit patios and gardens; window boxes attach to a window for small spaces; portable playpens fold away for trips and supervised time outdoors.

Check the mesh is strong enough that a cat can't push through, that the roof is covered, and that there's shade and water. Balcony nets close off a balcony without building anything.

Before you buy

• Setting. Patio, garden, window or balcony: pick a design built for where it goes.
• Security. Strong mesh, a covered top and secure latches keep cats in and predators out.
• Size. Room for a perch, a bed and a litter box if your cat stays out long.
• Weather. Shade, water and weather-resistant materials for real outdoor use.
