Cat Trees and Condos

A cat tree is climbing, scratching and sleeping space in one, and the right one depends on the biggest cat that will use it. Platform size and post thickness decide whether a large cat feels stable; a tree that wobbles under a jumping cat won't be used, and a tall tree should be anchored to a wall.

Check the sisal coverage (scratching posts get shredded first and some makers sell replacements), the size of perches and condos for your cat, and the footprint against the space you have.

Before you buy

• Cat size. Match platforms and the maker's weight rating to your heaviest cat; large cats need wide perches and thick posts.
• Stability. Taller trees need a wide base or a wall anchor; wobble is the top reason cats ignore a tree.
• Scratching surface. Sisal-wrapped posts take the scratching; check whether posts or rope can be replaced.
• Footprint and height. Measure the floor space and ceiling; floor-to-ceiling towers need exact heights.
