Why it matters
The FURminator's stainless edge reaches through the topcoat to pull out loose undercoat, which is where most shed hair comes from. This size is for small cats under about 4.5 kg (10 lb) with short hair under 5 cm.
FURminator says weekly sessions of 10 to 20 minutes remove up to 90% of loose hair and help reduce hairballs.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Good fit if
- Small short-haired cats
- Heavy shedders
- Hairball-prone cats
Look elsewhere if
- Cats with skin conditions without vet advice
- Severe matting that needs a groomer
- Owners expecting one session to fix shedding
Pros and cons
Pros
- Removes undercoat
- Self-cleaning button
- Durable steel edge
Cons
- Wrong size for big cats
- Not for long coats
- Easy to overdo
Limitations to weigh
- Keep sessions short and end with a treat; a cat that learns grooming is brief tolerates it far better.
- Use light strokes; deshedding tools can irritate skin if pressed or overused.
- Large or tight mats near the skin are safer for a groomer or vet to remove.
