Litter Boxes

Most litter problems start with a box that's too small. A box should be about one and a half times your cat's length; many standard boxes are smaller. High sides and top entries cut scatter and spraying over the edge; low entries suit kittens and older cats.

Stainless steel doesn't scratch or hold smells the way old plastic does. Keep one more box than you have cats, in quiet spots.

Before you buy

• Size. Aim for about 1.5 times your cat's length; bigger is almost always better.
• Entry. Top entry and high sides contain scatter; low entries suit seniors and kittens.
• Material. Stainless resists scratches and odor; plastic scratches and holds smell over time.
• Number of boxes. One per cat plus one, in quiet, separate spots.
