Cat Odor and Stain Control

Cat urine has to be broken down, not covered: enzyme cleaners digest the compounds a cat smells, which is what stops it returning to the same spot. Ammonia cleaners can make it worse because they smell like urine to a cat.

A UV light finds old, dried spots before you clean. Repeated accidents outside the box are often medical, so see your vet as well as cleaning.

Before you buy

• Enzymes first. Use an enzyme cleaner on urine and let it soak to the depth the urine reached.
• Concentrates. Concentrates cost less per spray for big areas; mix to the label ratio.
• Find old spots. A 365-385nm UV light shows dried urine best in a dark room.
• Medical causes. New accidents can signal illness; check with your vet.
